Berlin - Zehlendorf
SS residents
Due to the location close to the forest, the SS began in 1937, expropriating the lands that lay in the area. They wanted their employees and their families not only to have housing, but they also wanted to promote the formation of a nationalist elite. The community was therefore called "SS camaraderie development Krumme Lanke" and a housing association was created, Gagfah, which took over construction and management. The houses between the Argentine boulevard and Quermatenweg in Zehlendorf were built 1937-1939. They consist of 600 homes. The architect Hans Gerlach aligned its architecture closely with the SS headquarters for Race and Development.
The surroundings were to be a rural idyll and the design was to express a true German architecture. "Simple and genuine but with grace and dignity," as Gerlach put it. Therefore, most houses are built with brick roofs and wooden twigs with framed windows with shutters and a skylight above the front doors.
